Curry house at centre of 'dead husband' internet storm says mystery is now solved

The Indian restaurant at the centre of an internet storm over a widow claiming to see her dead husband in their promotional video has shared an image of the real diner.

Spice Cottage unintentionally went viral when they shared a video of diners from January 13 enjoying their evening after the restaurant had recently refurbished the establishment.

Lucy Watson, 59, then commented on the video on January 16 asking: "How old is the footage? My late husband and his son are on the first shot and he died in 2014??"

The restaurant's manager tried to put the rumour to bed by saying the video was filmed on January 13, making it impossible to have been from 2014.

He later said he also knew the diner in question.

The managers of the establishment in Westbourne, West Sussex, have now shared an image with the exact mystery diner - with hopes they fully put the bizarre claims to rest.

Retired IT manager Alan Harding has come forward to say the mystery diner was him.

He told the MailOnline: "I guess I am the ghost. It is just unbelievable how many people from around the world have read about this.

"I had not idea until a friend of mine called to say he had read about the ghost diner and thought it looked like me.

"I saw the video and of course recognised myself and my friend Kevin Parsons. It is all quite funny, but I am definitely very much alive."

The restaurant wrote on Facebook a tongue-in-cheek post and thanked those who were gripped to their seats by the saga.

The post reads: "Aloo Everyone! We have a ghee mattar we would like to close.

"The photo below is our customer that was captured in one of our recent promo videos. We can confirm he is not Lucy’s husband.

"As much as we wish our curries bring people out of kormas, unfortunately, this was not the case.

"Our video has spread through all corners of the world, and it has been a pleasure of meeting the customers who have cumin this week!

"If you are ever in the village of Westbourne, please pop in, there's never a dhall moment in our restaurant".

are insisting the video had been filmed earlier in the month and wasn't nine years old.

Last week, Lucy claimed she "instantly" spotted her husband Harry Doherty - an award-winning journalist and popular larger-than-life character.

The controversy continued to boil when Harry's own son Alex came out and said it was definitely not him or his father in the video.

The 39-year-old told the MailOnline: "No way. It's not my dad and it's not me. She's got it wrong.

"You can see from the comments that people are really intrigued about it. They really want to know the answers.

"The answer is that it's not my dad - that's it."

The sighting has been compared to the infamous Canoe man John Darwin who faked his own death at sea in a life insurance scam.

Azizur Rahman, one of the managers, told The Sun last week: "I don't know why she thinks she saw her husband in the video, it was taken the other day by me and my cousin.

"We filmed it on Friday the 13th of January this year. I saw the man she thinks is her husband come into the restaurant, he was in his 40s or 50s.

"I don't know his name but he comes in every two months or so. I think he was with his friend, not with a son. Most of our customers are regulars here."
