Cumnock 1, Glencairn 0: Late winner breaks Glencairn's hearts in cup final drama

Cumnock bagged a last-gasp winner to win the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time since 1989.

Findlay Frye’s strike inside second half stoppage time broke Rutherglen Glencairn’s hearts and sent the trophy to Ayrshire.

It was no more than the hosts deserved in a dramatic second half at Broadwood, and the red-hot favourites were the better side throughout.

But Glencairn weren’t without their chances, and were no disgrace to the West of Scotland First Division.

The first half was pretty even, with Jered Willet doing most of the running for Cumnock, while Glencairn’s Jack McIlveen had some decent chances.

The second half was much better, with several chances from both sides, and Cumnock's Findlay Frye missing the best of them late on with the sides locked at 0-0.

But he popped up with a priceless winner for the West of Scotland Premier Division side.

These sides went into the game with not too much Scottish Junior Cup pedigree between them.

Cumnock last won the trophy in 1989, and were last in a final back in 2008, while this was Glencairn's first final appearance in 48 years, and they last won it in 1939.

Either way, as the West of Scotland Premier League club, Cumnock were red-hot favourites.

The first chance fell to McIlveen in nine minutes, but his shot was well held by Jamie Barclay.

Willet and Findlay Frye combined to send Jamie Wilson down the right wing and his cross was well met by Willet but he fired narrowly wide of the right post.

Glencairn threatened again in 22 minutes but a free kick went bouncing past the right post, with Michael Lone closing in.

At the other end, Jordan Moore was nearly sent through on goal in 29 minutes, but it was well defended by Glencairn.

Two minutes later the dangerous Willet sent a shot high and wide of the top left corner from distance.

McBride went close for Glencairn in 33 minutes, but his curling free kick was well taken by Barclay.

Harry Mitchell had been quiet for Glencairn, but sent a shot high from distance in 35 minutes.

Willett was never far from Cumnock’s action however, and he saw a shot well blocked.

Cumnock started the second half the better side and in 48 minutes Moore was sent through, but good defending from Glencairn cleared the danger effectively.

Sixty seconds later, Gregory Ferry sent an angled header flashing past the left post.

From a corner on the right in 61 minutes, Glencairn's Dom McLaughlin and Mick O'Byrne collided while going for the same ball, with the header landing past the right post.

Anthony Maguire was booked for a cynical challenge on Jamie Conn on the left flank in 74 minutes, but Andy McLaughlin's curling free kick was well taken by Scott Law at the right post corner,

Conn was causing havoc on the flanks and a sweeping move down the right should have seen Findlay Frye bag the opener, but he somehow scooped over from about six yards in 78 minutes.

Conn was sent down the left and cut inside, but saw his shot well blocked by Law’s chest in 89 minutes.

But Frye's header was well blocked and he reacted fastest to slam in the rebound to win the cup for Cumnock.
