One of London’s best sandwich shops, Mondo, is to open a second site after seeing huge success in Peckham.
The next venue will open on Friday April 10 at Deptford Market Yards and will be more of a grab-and-go concept, though there will be outdoor seating and a drinks licence.
The cult brand sees daily queues at its shop on Peckham Road, which opened in 2024 to five-star reviews, and remains popular at its original location at the Grove Park Tavern nearby.
Mondo has long been one of London’s foremost destinations for high-spec sandwiches. One “sando” combines fennel and picante salami, pistachio mortadella, pecorino, hot relish, peppers and shredded lettuce.
Another, the Mondo Frango, comprises peri-peri chicken thigh, pea salsa verde, matchstick fries and salad leaves.
The new “Mondo to go” will bring a changing roster of established sarnies and sides, such as house pickles and latkes, but will also sell a “Deptford-only” menu of new items.
Drinks will include pints (Murphy’s is the big one), slushies and a rotating range of homemade sodas and lemonades.
Like its predecessor, the space is inspired by well-loved caffs, diners, slice joints and anywhere with a hatch, and has been brought to life by Tom Cummings, the designer of Cafe Mondo.
Co-founders Jack Macrae and Viggo Blegvad said: “After many years working in Camberwell, 5 minutes from Jack’s flat, it’s only fair we open a site in Deptford, 5 minutes from Viggo’s.”
