Crystal Palace sweating on Marc Guehi fitness after England injury setback

Marc Guehi is a doubt for Crystal Palace’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa after aggravating a hip problem.

The centre-back hopes the damage is not serious after he came off at half-time in England’s 3-1 friendly win over Scotland in Glasgow on Tuesday night.

Palace cleared Guehi to join up with the Three Lions squad despite carrying an issue for several weeks prior.

The 23-year-old has since taken his chance to put himself in pole position to replace Harry Maguire as the Manchester United centre-back faces ongoing questions about his selection ahead of Euro 2024 next summer, also playing 90 minutes in the 1-1 qualifying draw against Ukraine in Poland last Saturday.

Palace medical staff will assess Guehi on Thursday upon his return to south London. Roy Hodgson will likely have to pick a team to face Villa without his previously ever-present defender for the first time, with Guehi having started every top-flight match since the former England manager’s return to Selhurst Park in March.

James Tomkins and Chris Richards will compete to replace a player signed from Chelsea for £18million in 2021. Rob Holding, who joined on transfer deadline day from Arsenal for £3.5m, could also make the matchday squad for the first time.

Palace will hope their star defender returns soon, with London rivals Fulham visiting Selhurst next weekend before a double-header away at Manchester United in the league and Carabao Cup.
