Crystal Palace: Sam Johnstone injury return date as Remi Matthews prepares to face Man City

Injury-hit Crystal Palace face starting third-choice goalkeeper Remi Matthews at Manchester City on Saturday.

The 29-year-old made his debut in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Liverpool at Selhurst Park, replacing No1 Sam Johnstone, who came off with a calf injury in the 87th minute.

Matthews conceded from the only shot he faced — Harvey Elliott’s 91st-minute winner. Johnstone’s injury is not serious but returning against Brighton at Selhurst Park next Thursday is a more realistic option. No2 Dean Henderson is out with a thigh injury.

Matthews, a 2021 signing from Sunderland, had never played in the Premier League before last weekend, having made most of his appearances in League One.

Palace are on a five-match winless streak and their manager Roy Hodgson is facing increased scrutiny.

Jefferson Lerma and Tyrick Mitchell could return from injury against City. Eberechi Eze, Odsonne Edouard and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi are close but doubtful for this weekend. Jordan Ayew is suspended after picking up two yellow cards last weekend.
