Crystal Palace ratings after penalty shootout defeat in Carabao Cup at Newcastle United

Crystal Palace were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after missing three penalties in a 3-2 shootout defeat at Newcastle United.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta had the best chance of the first-half when his fierce strike was tipped over by Nick Pope. Chris Wood had two big chances to break the deadlock early in the second-half but was denied by Sam Johnstone on both occasions.

After just over an hour, Eddie Howe sent in the cavalry with Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman brought on in a triple change. Miguel Almiron, who had scored seven goals in his last seven Premier League games, would join in ten minutes from the end.

Almiron came close to grabbing the winner soon after he came on, but Johnstone had done well to parry away the effort for the opposite corner. Newcastle would book their place in the last 16 after Nick Pope saved penalties from Luka Milivojevic, Mateta and Macolm Ebiowei in the shootout.

Sam Johnstone - 7

Almost caught out by Jonjo Shelvey's audacious lob from distance but untested in the first-half. Denied Chris Wood after a short back-pass seconds into the second period and Miguel Almiron's effort late on. Saved Botman's penalty in the shoot-out.

Nathaniel Clyne - 7

Didn't see a lot of the ball but was always alert and quick to snuff out any danger on his flank, keeping a close eye on runs in behind.

Joel Ward - 6

Partnered well with Clyne to keep Allan Saint-Maximin under wraps. Positioned himself well for a couple of passed in behind and was calm when on the ball. Scored the third penalty for Palace.

James Tomkins - 6

Almost gifted Chris Wood a goal with a short backpass early in the second-half but his blushes were spared by Johnstone, Tomkins' only mistake in the game. Stopped Wood getting a shot away with a well-timed sliding tackle inside the box.

Marc Guehi - 6

Done enough to prevent Elliot Andersen a free header on goal early in the second-half. Kept calm when under pressure.

Tyrick Mitchell - 6

Gave away a couple of fouls in dangerous areas on the left side. A few balls in behind the Newcastle backline went astray.

Luka Milivojevic - 6

Commanded well from the centre of the pitch and helped out at both ends, although Palace were lacklustre offensively. First penalty taker for Palace which was well saved by Pope.

Will Hughes - 6

Battled hard in the middle of the park, especially when Bruno Guimaraes entered the fray and occasionally riled up the home crowd. Sent Pope the wrong way to score Palace's second penalty.

Jordan Ayew - 5

Drawn in the opposition to win a number of fouls throughout the game. Made some threatening runs towards goal but his final ball was poor.

Michael Olise - 6

Good when he had the ball at his feet but didn't see enough of it to make an impact on the game. Substituted after 78 minutes.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta - 4

Drilled a shot at goal after 22 minutes but was denied by a superb save from Nick Pope. Made some good runs into the channels with the ball but lacked an end product. A very poor penalty in the shootout that was easily saved by Pope.

SUBSTITUTES

Malcolm Ebiowei (replaced Michael Olise 78') - N/A

Jairo Riedewald (replaced Jordan Ayew 78') - N/A
