Crumlin swap shop will save you money on your Christmas shopping

A Crumlin swap shop is appealing for people to get involved with their initiative ahead of their busy Christmas season.

Change Clothes Crumlin was first formed in August this year to provide people with alternatives to the fast fashion cycle. The group’s founder Mary was born and raised in Crumlin and says its success is testament to community spirit.

The group is holding its next swap shop on Saturday 10 December in Scoil Iosagain, located on Aughnavanagh Road. The premise is simple: a person receives one token per item, which they can then use to swap for another garment.

Mary told Dublin Live: “We ran some pilot events three weeks and there were just under 900 swaps made in that week alone. We want to run it again before Christmas because we’re getting asked about it by so many people. People are trying to get their Christmas outfits now and it gives them an opportunity to swap rather than buy new.”

The upcoming swap shop costs €5 for entry, although senior citizens and students can avail of a discounted price of €3. Mary explains there has been a surprising demographic mix of people attending their events, which the group is keen on upholding.

She explains: “There’s a mix of men and women as well, which is great. It’s kind of a struggle getting men to attend these sort of events so it’s something we want to encourage more. I think we had about 10 rails and only 2 of them were men’s for the last event, we really want to expand on that. We also have kids sections as well which are popular.”

Mary is also hosting free upcycling workshops for people to attend. The entry level classes teach people how to carry out minor repairs and embellishments on outfits they otherwise may have thrown out. Their upcoming upcycling class, held next Sunday in Richmond’s Barracks, has a festive focus, as people are requested to sew, stitch or embellish their damaged jumpers with a Christmas design.

The hub was one of several local projects selected by Crumlin Taking Action Together (CTAT), a green energy initiative. The group received funding from Creative Ireland and the Arts Office, but the continued growth of Change Clothes Crumlin requires further input.

The next swap shop is being held on 10 December while the upcycling events occurs on 27 November from 2-3.30 pm. Further information is available here.
