Cruise ship smashes into iceberg in ocean disaster caught on terrified passenger's camera

This is the terrifying moment a passenger filmed a cruise ship smashing into an iceberg in the middle of the ocean.

A 2,000-passenger Norwegian Cruise Line ship was heading towards an Alaskan glacier but was forced to make a u-turn after heavy fog caused the ship to smash into an iceberg.

Whilst some passengers were asleep and blissfully unaware of the events happening outside, horrified passengers caught on camera the devastating thud.

Such was the impact of the crash, the cruise ship was forced to dock at Juneau, Alaska, as experts assessed the damage made to the ship before recommending it be returned to Seattle for repairs.

The ship, which was looked at by specialist divers, was in need of some work but fortunately no one was injured.

Passengers on the ship spoke of their horror at the terrifying incident as Alicia Amador spoke to Juneau Empire and claimed it was a 'horrible experience'.

She said: "The whole boat came to a complete stop from the impact,' she said and described the iceberg as 'the size of a semi-truck."

Jason Newman from Atlanta, Georgia, was also on the cruise and told KTOO: "The ship had a severe judder. You could feel the strike. And then it listed."

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line told Cruise Hive: "On June 25, 2022 while transiting to Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, Norwegian Sun was engulfed by dense fog, limiting visibility and resulting in the ship making contact with a growler."

The ship was still 'fully operational' and was heading back to Juneau, Alaska for 'assessment', Norwegian Cruise Line said.

The ship did not report any injuries, according to Petty Officer 1st Class Nate Littlejohn, a Coast Guard public affairs specialist.

He told Juneau Empire the captain reported the incident as soon as it happened to the National Guard - and a search and rescue mission was not required.

As a result of the crash and having to turn the ship around for repairs, passengers were told they would get their money back.
