Cruise ship jobs offering a change of scenery at sea

If you're looking for an adventure and a change of career, then getting paid to sail off into the sunset might be perfect for you.

Cruise ships offer a great chance to get away on holiday but they also require a lot of staff to help keep the vessel running smoothly. And that means there are often jobs available that can take you around the world.

Ships need everyone from catering staff to medical staff and everyone in between. We've done the hard work and found five jobs that you can apply for on cruise ships or similar vessels.

Fleet inventory manager for an international cruise line

This job - advertised at TotalJobs.com and Caterer.com - is for a fleet inventory manager and will likely involve catering supplies. No salary is listed, as this will be discussed on the basis of a successful interview, but the job listing does not that the salary will be tax-free, meaning you will get more of what you earn.

The role will involve travelling on a ship. Because of this the successful applicant will be given a single cabin onboard.

The start date is listed as ASAP. However, previous cruise ship experience as an inventory manager or a travelling inventory manager is required.

Ships nurse

Navis Consulting is acting as the recruitment firm for a cruise ship which is looking for a nurse to join its team. The nurse will work alongside the staff captain, senior doctor, doctor and chief nurse.

The work will involve all "shipboard health-related matters" including "outbreak prevention, and illness reporting as required by international, national and company policies".

Applicants will need to be a registered nurse with at least three years of experience in an emergency room, intensive care unit, cardiac critical care unit or trauma unit. An intermediate to advanced verbal and written level of English is also required.

Ships doctor

A cruise ship is also looking for a trained doctor to medical care for its staff and guests. The onboard doctor will be tasked with diagnosing patients, creating treatment plans, carrying out clinical interventions and when needed coordinating evacuations.

The successful applicant will obviously need a medical degree and will also need to have three years post-graduate clinical experience in emergency medicine, acute care, or in an intensive care unit. They will also need to have an accredited ALS/ACLS certificate before boarding the vessel and may need to have PALS and ATLS certification.

The company also states that it recommends applicants have additional training in advanced airway management, ICU, primary emergency care, immediate medical care, ECG, advanced trauma life support and advanced pediatric life support. Experience in a private healthcare setting is also preferred.

Seasonal chef

If you can cook and fancy a change of scenery in the Mediterranean then this is the job for you. The position is a little different to others on the list as it's actually on board a yacht.

A minimum of one year of experience as a chef on a 35m motor or sailing yacht is required. The company also wants the applicant to have previous charter experience.

Unfortunately, due to the cabin arrangements, the position is only available to men. They will also have to help out with some light deck duties.

Boat master/skipper for Cardiff Cruises

Cardiff Cruises offers tours of Cardiff Bay and offers views of The Norwegian Church (Richard Swingler)

While this job isn't going to land you on a luxury cruise liner like some of the other jobs, this role is a little closer to home. Cardiff Cruises is looking for a seasonal skipper to join its team.

The company offers passengers 45-minute tours of Cardiff Bay, which offers sights of the Senedd and the Norwegian Church. The company also operates the Flatholm Island ferry.

The job will involve working 40 hours per week with some of the shifts being during the weekend and evenings. The company wishes applicants to have already carried out a basic ancillary course but will then teach them how to handle the boat and what to do in an emergency.

The boats dock at Penarth Marina (near the Cardiff Barrage) so those applying will need to be able to travel to the marina. It would also be preferred if those applying had first aid, basic fire and personal safety qualifications as well as a medical certificate.

Those wishing to apply need to send a CV and cover letter to jobs@cardiffcruises.com.
