Croydon children warned not to travel alone after robberies and assaults on pupils walking to school

Pupils in south London have been warned to "buddy up" while travelling to and from school after a number of children were robbed and attacked.

Oasis Academy Shirley Park, in Croydon, said "a number" of students were assaulted as they made their way to school on Thursday.

One pupil was taken to hospital with a head injury following the attacks.

In a letter to parents on Thursday, the principals of Oasis Academy Shirley Park''s upper school and sixth form, and lower and middle school, urged vigilance.

"Sadly this morning a number of our students were robbed/or assaulted on their way to school," wrote the principals.

"The incidents took place in and around Woodside tram stop & Ashburton park, all incidents have been reported to the police.

"The police have assured us they will increase their presence in and around the area, especially at the start and end of the school day.

"We will also up our staff presence at the front of the school.

"For today and tomorrow, we are asking students to please avoid Ashburton Park when travelling to and from school. It is also important that students are not travelling alone and that they should buddy up with someone who is travelling in the same direction."

A spokesperson for the school said: “The safety and wellbeing of all at Oasis Academy Shirley Park is always the number one priority, and so in response to a recent incident we have advised students to exercise additional caution. We are working closely with the police and enhancing our staff presence outside of the school to make sure that everybody can continue to travel to and from school with confidence."

The warning comes months after Elianne Andam, 15, was stabbed to death in September after getting off a bus while she was on her way to school in Croydon.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with her murder and will face trial on April 29.

Regarding Thursday's attacks, the Met Police said: "We are investigating reports of four teenagers being robbed in the Woodside area of Croydon at around 8am on Thursday, January 4.

"One of the teenagers was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury.

"There have been no arrests and enquiries are ongoing.

"Any witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting CAD 1387/04Jan."

Oasis Academy Shirley Park did not immediately respond to the Standard's request for a comment.
