Crowns to replace peacocks for Bond Street Christmas lights in tribute to the Queen

How Bond Street is set to be lit this Christmas

Bond Street is set to be illuminated by four crowns of bright lights this Christmas in tribute to the Queen.

From November 17, 93,652 energy friendly LEDs will be turned on as part of a new look for 2022 with the peacock feather lights, which had been up for the past eight years along the road, being replaced.

Katie Thomas, director of Bond Street, said the new design “takes inspiration from the resplendent magnificence of The Crown Jewels and the world-famous and revered jewellery houses that have settled in Bond Street over the centuries.

“Concept and planning for the new Christmas lights started in early 2021 to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and our longest serving monarch, HRH Queen Elizabeth II”.

The lights will be illuminated from November 17.

The crowns will be visible at each of the key junctions on Bond Street and are designed to look like the Imperial State Crown.

There will also be light “crossings” along the length of the road and strung across Bond Street’s “old” and “new” sections in the style of necklaces. These are a tribute to both the Queen and the area’s history of jewellery design.

Another feature will be the entrances at the Oxford Street end of New Bond Street and Piccadilly end of Old Bond Street forming a tiara-like gateway.

The planning organisers pressed ahead as a tribute after the Queen’s death on September 8.

The royal theme is also nod to Sir Thomas Bond, whom the street is named after, who selected the site to be close to palaces of St James. Today Bond Street and St James Street have more royal warrants than any other area in the UK.
