Crowds watch six Canadian F-18 fighter jets land in Scotland after NATO exercise

Six Canadian F-18 fighter jets touched down in Scotland this week after a NATO exercise, amid the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

The fighters jets landed at Prestwick Airport on Tuesday April 12 after the annual Frisian Flag NATO exercise at Leeuwarden Air Base in Netherlands.

The multinational aerial exercise plans complex missions, including offensive and defensive training in the skies above the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

But they decided to stop by at Prestwick for a few days before they journey home to North America.

A YouTube video showed the jets landing at the airport as a crowd of airline enthusiasts looked on.

The planes roared into sight across the Scottish skyline, but instead of landing they performed a series of low approach manoeuvres for the onlookers.

The crowds gasped as the pilots performed daring 360 loops across the Ayrshire coast, before eventually landing and allowing the plane spotters to see the fighter jets in their full glory from close up.

The F-18 is a Royal Canadian Airforce craft that have been used on military missions since 1982 and were last used in real time action against ISIS forces in 2016.

The jets have been spotted at Prestwick Airport various times over the years, refuelling on their way to far-flung destinations, and were at the airport in March of this year just prior to the NATO exercise.

The Daily Record understands the Canadian F-18s are due to leave Scotland and return home tomorrow.

There have been a number of sightings of military jets in Scotland already this year, including Lanarkshire in January.

The Record reported earlier this month on a formation of six US fighter jets flying over Fife, and a unique American Boeing V-22 Osprey landed just outside of Glasgow last week.

Data from tracking website FlightRadar24 revealed that one of the planes was a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker heading out to the Atlantic Ocean from RAF Mildenhall.
