Crowds gather early at Sydney Harbour for New Year’s Eve fireworks

Crowds began gathering early around Sydney Harbour ahead of New Year’s Eve, hoping to secure the best views of Wednesday night’s fireworks. From Tuesday, people lined up near the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and inside the Royal Botanic Gardens, claiming space hours before celebrations begin.

Video footage showed people running into the Botanic Gardens as gates opened, keen to mark out a spot.

Another popular viewpoint is Blues Point, which offers clear views of the Harbour Bridge. Queues stretched up nearby streets as people passed through security checks.

This year’s fireworks and visual display will include a tribute to the victims of the Bondi terror attack.
