Sound absurd? Yeah, well, so do a lot of things happening in America these days. In just the latest example of “hey, that’s fascism!”, it has been revealed that the Department of Homeland Security has been quietly subpoenaing major tech companies to gain the personal information of users who’ve criticized ICE.

Given that ICE has been trampling over the Constitution while inflicting a wave of bloody brutality in Minnesota, which culminated in the street executions of two innocent people, we’re guessing that’s a long list.
As per a report in The New York Times, Reddit, Meta, and Google have been sent hundreds of subpoenas from the DHS demanding personal information on their users for posts and discussions on their platforms, which include Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit itself. The users in question are those who “criticized ICE or pointed to the locations of ICE agents.”

As per the report, the companies are indeed providing your data to the government, whose ultimate plans for it are unclear. Though, let’s face it, they’re not gathering your address to send you a birthday card…
So far, all the companies involved have remained quiet except for Google, which said:
“When we receive a subpoena, our review process is designed to protect user privacy while meeting our legal obligations. … We inform users when their accounts have been subpoenaed, unless under legal order not to or in an exceptional circumstance. We review every legal demand and push back against those that are overbroad.”
It goes without saying that free speech – and freedom to criticize the government – is at the very bedrock of America’s values and one of the core rights enshrined in the Constitution. But after watching the nightmare that was ICE’s invasion of Minnesota, it’s abundantly clear that constitutional rights are more like guidelines for Trump and his minions.
So, if you’ve been exercising your rights as an American by speaking up against ICE on social media, you may soon hear someone hammering on your door as they bring you in for a little questioning about what you said to your friends on Facebook.
