Cristiano Ronaldo next club options after leaving Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer a Manchester United player, with the legendary Portuguese forward confirmed to be leaving Old Trafford.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner looked to have played his last match for United after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan and that has since been confirmed by the club.

In a statement, United said: "Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

"Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch."

The list of clubs who might want to sign the player might not be as long as many will have expected, with the ageing forward having astronomical wage demands as well as having shown some signs of decline in recent months.

Ronaldo released a statement of his own, which read: "Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.

"I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future." Here, we take a look at the possible options for Ronaldo as he looks for a new club.

Sporting CP

A move to return to his boyhood club could be the best-case scenario for Ronaldo, with his most recent homecoming to Old Trafford having ended in disappointment.

There is no way that the Liga Nos club would be able to pay his current wages, but there is a chance that he would be willing to accept that for a chance to play back in his home country.

Chelsea

There were talks in the summer between Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes and new Chelsea majority shareholder Todd Boehly having taken place in the summer.

Given Chelsea's goalscoring issues so far this season, there could be a move to reignite interest in the Portuguese star. However, with Chelsea looking towards a Red Bull-esque model of signing younger players, it may not be a move to match the new identity of the club going forward under Graham Potter.

Inter Miami

The MLS club owned by David Beckham could be a lucrative option for Ronaldo as well as one to aid his profile heading towards retirement.

David Beckham has already discussed the possibility of signing Ronaldo, with the former Manchester United midfielder a key figure as owner of the MLS franchise. There could be a stumbling block with Miami also reported to be looking at their options with regards to signing Lionel Messi.

Real Madrid

Ronaldo played the best football of his career during his time in Madrid, with four Champions League wins to show for his eight years spent in the Spanish capital.

The La Liga side have impressed once more this season, but will need to look at striking options in January following an injury to Karim Benzema and Ronaldo could be the perfect fit having worked with Ancelotti in Madrid between 2013 and 2015.
