Cristiano Ronaldo injury concern as five Man Utd stars ruled out vs West Ham

Cristiano Ronaldo could miss Manchester United's crunch Premier League clash with West Ham this weekend as the Portuguese striker struggles with a neck problem.

The 36-year-old picked up the issue during Wednesday night's 3-1 win over Brentford and was substituted in the second half.

And it could prevent him from featuring for Ralf Rangnick's side as they collide with fourth-placed West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

As well as Ronaldo, United could be left without four other senior stars for the game against the Hammers. Edinson Cavani, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho are all facing a race against time to be passed fit for Saturday's encounter.

“Cristiano is a question mark because he has a problem with his neck,” Rangnick told MUTV when discussing Ronaldo and Cavani's availability.

“He received treatment yesterday for two-three hours and we will have to wait to see how he feels today.

“Edi hasn’t been training with the team yet and will hopefully resume training today and then we’ll take the final decision after the training session today, [around] if he will be available for the game tomorrow."

Wan-Bissaka, Lingard and Sancho are also touch-and-go for the game. Lingard has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle in recent days with his long-term future at Old Trafford unclear.

“Aaron will still be missing,” added Rangnick.

“He’s still ill. Jesse resumed back for training yesterday and he will be training today so he should be available for the game.

“We need to see where Jadon stands. He didn’t train yesterday. As you know, he attended a funeral on Wednesday and didn’t want to train yesterday as he is still affected by that. We will have to see.

“I will see him for training today and speak with him after the training session, to see if he is in the state of mind, and also his energy [is there], so he can be available for tomorrow.”

It's been a rough week for Ronaldo, who was slammed for his petulant reaction after being withdrawn in the 70th minute by Rangnick in the midweek trip to Brentford.

The veteran was shown furiously muttering to himself as he left the pitch after being sacrificed to see the game out.

Rangnick insisted that the decision was made as Ronaldo had only just returned to action after a hip issue and defender Ronaldo's reaction, claiming it was "normal" as "a striker wants to score".

But he later tackled the issue directly, telling BBC Sport after the game: "Listen Cristiano, you are 36 in great shape, but when are a head coach, you will see if through the glasses of a head coach.

"My job is to take the decisions in the best interest of the team and the club and I hope he sees it the same way."
