Cristian Romero outlines his preferred position in Tottenham team and reveals Richarlison impact

Cristian Romero has outlined that his favourite position is in the middle of Tottenham's three-man defence. Arriving on loan from Atalanta last summer before his move was made permanent last month, the 24-year-old has been a huge success for the Lilywhites in his time at the club.

Eric Dier's role at the heart of Spurs' defence has seen Romero utilised on the right, a position which has allowed him to get forward numerous times in a game as Antonio Conte has given his wide centre-backs license to push on when the opportunity is there. Looking right at home and "comfortable" in the position, Romero has indicated that a central role is his preferred one due to his experience in the middle.

"It's very different. My favourite position is in the middle, because that's where I have always played, but I am playing on the right for the national team too now and I will happily play wherever I am asked to, so I don't have a problem with it," the Argentina international told Sky Sports.

"At the beginning, it was difficult, for sure, but I got used to it and I learned the role. I have to keep learning and keep correcting many things, but I'm good and I feel comfortable there."

Romero has earned plenty of recognition during his year at Tottenham and many people are going to look to the Argentine as a defensive example if he continues to go from strength-to-strength in the Premier League over the coming years. But who are the defenders that stand out for Romero at present?

"Today, the best defender for me is Virgil van Dijk, always, and Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United," he revealed. "For me, they are the best in the Premier League."

One talking point amongst Tottenham fans in the summer was how Romero and Richarlison would get on playing alongside each other following a couple of clashes when the Brazilian was playing for Everton last term. It's fair to say that the £60million man has made quite an impression on the centre-back and his new teammates since his summer switch, however.

"He has brought a lot to the team," admitted Romero. "He is a player who is a little bit different to the ones we already had. He is a player who puts in absolutely everything, all the time.

"We have Harry Kane, who, for me, is a maximum talent and one of the best strikers in the world. We also have Son [Heung-Min] and [Dejan] Kulusevski, who also make the difference. But Richy is giving us different things and that's something which I think is infectious."
