Crime boss' girlfriend avoids further time behind bars

The former girlfriend of crime boss George Marrogi has avoided further jail time after admitting to dealing with $110,000 in alleged criminal proceeds.

Antoinetta Mannella, 30, pleaded guilty to receiving the money into her personal bank account between April 13 and April 15, 2021.

It's alleged Marrogi provided the criminal proceeds to the head of a money-laundering syndicate, who then placed the funds into Mannella's bank account.

The $110,000, which was made-up of three separate transactions, was never declared to the Australian Taxation Office.

Magistrate Kieran Gilligan on Thursday noted Mannella's offending happened over a short period and sat at the lower end of the scale of seriousness.

He also accepted Mannella was currently serving a 13-year jail term for her role in importing and trafficking drugs with Marrogi.

Mannella was basically in solitary confinement in prison due to her notoriety and her mental health had suffered as a result, Mr Gilligan said.

The magistrate said the offending should also be viewed in the context of Mannella having dependent personality and post-traumatic stress disorders.

Mr Gilligan was satisfied her prospects of rehabilitation were good and a further jail term was not appropriate.

He sentenced Mannella to a $2000 fine with conviction.

Her co-offenders Jesse Marrogi and Madlin Enwiya - the brother and mother of George Marrogi - were each sentenced to jail terms on Wednesday.

Jesse Marrogi was granted appeal bail so he could challenge the seven-month prison term he received for dealing in more than $140,000 in alleged criminal proceeds.

Enwiya was sentenced to three months' jail  but was released immediately on a good behaviour bond for 12 months.
