Cramped UK nightclub voted one of worst in Europe

A cramped UK bar has been dubbed one of the worst nightclubs in Europe.

Notorious for sticky carpets, cheesy tunes and overcrowded atmosphere, Klute Nightclub in the city of Durham has earned the infamous title of one of Europe's worst venues.

But the club has become a "rite of passage" for students in the city and is well known for their 'Quids in Tuesday', where some drinks cost £1.50 and shots are £1 throughout the night.

The Mirror reports it was once voted the second worst nightclub in Europe by FHM magazine - but nabbed the top spot after the actual worst club in Belgrade burned down.

One former regular, Alabama Jackson, described her love-hate relationship with the bar as she looked back on her student days.

She told LadBible : "I went there on my first night of ‘Freshers Week’ and said I’d never go again, but ended up returning on various other nights out when I was too drunk to realise it would be a mistake.”

Alabama added: "But the minute I entered I realised it truly was Europe’s worst nightclub - if not the world’s worst.

“It absolutely does live up to the title. It’s truly disgusting…It didn’t stop me returning, though."

Klute was also voted the best worst nightclub in the UK in a nationwide poll by student newspaper The Tab in 2016.

In 2019, it was reported that No 10 guru Dominic Cummings - whose uncle owned Klute - once worked as a doorman there on the weekends.

A former colleague told the Sunday Express: “He might not have looked like a doorman.

“But he had a way with him that suggested it wasn’t worth taking him on.”

Cummings is also still listed as a director of Klute Limited, even though the nightclub was bought by Tokyo Industries in 2013.

The club is so legendary that it even has its own entry on Urban Dictionary.

It reads: “The smallest, sweatiest ‘s*** hole I have ever had the displeasure of visiting.

“Now exclusively for students the music in Klute is always cheese, the students are always hammered, and the walls are always dripping with sweat.”

The Mirror has contacted a representative of Klute Nightclub for comment.
