Cramlington drink driver who crashed en route to McDonald's 'just wanted a burger'

A drink driver who crashed her car en route to McDonald's tearfully told officers "I just wanted a burger".

Paige Harvey had been out socialising with friends in Cramlington and admitted to having had four or five double gins.

The hungry 24-year-old then made the foolish decision to get behind the wheel of her Renault Clio in order to drive to the fast food restaurant, a court heard.

But Harvey never made it to her destination as she ploughed the vehicle into a fence.

She was arrested after police arrived at the scene and she failed a roadside breath test.

Harvey, of Doxford Place, in Cramlington, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when she appeared at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Prosecutor, James Long, said police were called to reports of an accident on Glenluce Drive, in Cramlington, shortly before midnight on December 29 last year.

They saw Harvey had crashed her car into a metal fence at the bottom of an embankment.

Mr Long said: "The defendant is sitting on a pavement at the time. She realises immediately she's in some difficulties because she says "I know I'm going to fail the test, my dad is will kill me".

"She does indeed fail the test.

"She says in interview that she had been drinking with friends and drove to McDonald's. She said she had four or five double gins.

"She said "I just wanted a burger"."

The court heard that Harvey, who has no past convictions, gave a reading of 70mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath when the legal limit is just 35.

Graham Crouth, defending, said Harvey had made a "poor judgement" and was apologetic.

He added: "She accepts that she shouldn't have driven to McDonald's in the circumstances. Fortunately, nobody else was involved.

"She's lost control and struck a fence. To her credit, she remained at the scene."

Harvey was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge. She was also banned from the roads for 18 months.
