Craig Dawson reveals what is next for West Ham as Aaron Cresswell defends Newcastle result

Aaron Cresswell has hit back at claims West Ham are 'running out of gas' despite just one win in five Premier League matches.

The Hammers began the new year with three straight victories in all competitions but their form has tailed off and left them with just a league win over relegation threatened Watford in recent weeks.

The loss of form has led to claims of tiredness within the West Ham camp caused by the extra pressure of European football, a small squad and no transfer activity in the January window.

However, Cresswell has hit back at these suggestions and insisted West Ham are still fresh ahead of the Premier League run-in.

"I don't think we're feeling we've run out of gas," Cresswell told the club website. "But the fans know when you're in these competitions there are plenty of games and plenty of things still to play for.

"Today [Saturday] won't decide where we finish in the league and we'll go again on Monday at the training ground and try to put things right."

Cresswell returned to form against Newcastle after a poor display against Leicester, where he was at fault for both the Foxes goals, and provided a superb assist for Craig Dawson to open the scoring. The left-back was delighted with the assist but gave the credit to the centre-back for his second goal in two games.

"When you've got players like Daws who can head the ball, certainly for people like me it makes my job a lot easier. He's fantastic in the air and also defensively," Cresswell added.

"It's massively important all over [to be good at set pieces] and most teams work on that and we certainly work on that being a massive asset for us this year as it was last year."

Dawson for his part gave all the credit to Cresswell with the full-back providing an inch-perfect delivery.

"It was a great ball in from Cressy," the defender said. "Set piece goals are a strong point to our game and we work hard on them. It’s nice to chip in."

After conceding a sloppy equaliser on the stroke of half-time Cresswell was disappointed with the result but believes there are enough games left in the season to keep up their European push.

"It's frustrating again to just take one point," he said. "But we've got to move on. I still think there are plenty of games left in the league and today's game is not going to decide where we're going to finish.

"There are still 12 games to go and plenty of points to play for, so let's regroup and go again."

Dawson agreed with Cresswell over the result and is already looking ahead to the Hammers' next fixture, a vital home clash with fellow European contenders Wolves.

"It’s disappointing to pick up a couple of draws in a row," he added. "But they are two good sides so we’ll get back to the training ground, work hard and see what happens next week."
