Craig Cathcart "proud" to lead Northern Ireland into Euro 2024 group opener

Craig Cathcart says it will be "an honour" to follow in the footsteps of previous Northern Ireland captains when he leads the team out against San Marino on Thursday night.

The Watford defender will win his 70th cap in the Group H opener at the Stadio Olimpico di San Marino.

Cathcart says he is full of pride after he was given the nod by Michael O'Neill to take the armband with the likes of Steven Davis and Jonny Evans ruled out due to injury.

"Obviously it's a proud moment for myself and my family," he said.

"I've been privileged to play with some fantastic captains down the years for Northern Ireland and it's an honour to follow in their footsteps.

"I have captained Watford quite a lot this season so it will not be too dissimilar to that. I will just try to lead by example and play my normal game."

The 34-year-old is back in the international set-up again after he ruled himself out of the Nations League campaign last year.

A disappointing return of five points from six games signalled the end of Ian Baraclough's tenure.

Now back in the fold alongside O'Neill following his return as manager Cathcart says it "feels like old times again".

"It feels like old times, there's familiar faces around, a good couple of days training and the feel good factor is back," he said.

"I felt like I needed a break at that stage of my career. I felt like I needed a summer off and I enjoyed time with my family.

"But when I spoke to Michael on the phone, I was happy to come back into the fold. It absolutely feels good to be back."

With so many key players unavailable for selection Cathcart knows pressure will be on him and the other experienced players as they bid to kick off their Euro 2024 qualifying in a positive manner.

"The experienced players need to lead by example," he said.

"Michael is experienced in what he wants to get across to the players.

"We had good training back in Belfast and the lads have taken it on really well."
