Criticising the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] for adopting a shallow perspective on national politics, United Democratic Front (UDF) convener M.M. Hassan has said that the party stooped so low to reduce the just-concluded party congress into an anti-Congress conference.
Addressing media persons here on Monday, the Congress leader alleged that the CPI(M) succumbed to the pressure exerted by its Kerala unit to toe its political line and vouch for its developmental model.
He alleged that the party’s central leadership backtracked on its original stance and endorsed the SilverLine semi-high-speed rail project. He termed it an irony that a party congress that inducted All India Kisan Sabha president Ashok Dhawale, who led the agitation against the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, into the Polit Bureau extended support for the State government’s contentious rail project.
Issues neglected
Mr. Hassan said the party congress had neglected several grave national issues, including the problems faced by farmers and unemployed youths in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled States. “Besides, the party which usually delves upon international issues failed to discuss the unfolding crises in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Ukraine in a departure from tradition,” he alleged.
