The Cowboys announced on Saturday they hired Brian Schottenheimer as their new offensive coordinator, replacing Kellen Moore.
Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, is a veteran NFL coach who spent the 2022 season as an offensive assistant for the Cowboys. The 49-year-old has been an offensive coordinator in the NFL for the Jets, Rams and, most recently, the Seahawks. He also spent a year in college as Georgia’s offensive coordinator, along with recent stops as an assistant at Indianapolis and Jacksonville.
“I am thrilled and thankful for this exciting opportunity and embrace the high standard and expectations that come with this role and the Dallas Cowboys organization,” Schettenheimer said in a statement.
Dallas and Moore mutually parted ways following the team’s divisional round loss to the 49ers after Moore spent the previous five seasons with the team, four of which as offensive coordinator. Moore quickly rebounded, as he will take over as the offensive coordinator for the Chargers.
While Moore called plays for Dallas in the previous four years, head coach Mike McCarthy announced he will take over the play calling duties in 2023. McCarthy last called plays when he was the head coach of the Packers.
“He has been an important part of our staff already and has a great grasp of where we are and where we want to go,” McCarthy said of Schottenheimer. “This will be an exciting and efficient transition for us that I am confident will help yield the growth and results we all want and expect.”
