The Cowboys didn’t trade for wide receiver Brandin Cooks to have him become just another weapon for the offense. They’re implementing ways to make sure he has a chance to be involved in as many situations as possible, which shouldn’t be hard with CeeDee Lamb lining up alongside him.
And as The Athletic’s Jon Machota recently revealed, the plan for Dallas is to literally make sure Cooks and Lamb are lined up next to each other ... as in directly next to each other.
The plan is to often line up Cooks next to Lamb, forcing opposing safeties to pick which they are going to double. It’ll often be Lamb, which should lead to many big plays by Cooks, who appears to be in excellent shape entering his 10th NFL season.
As talented as Cooks is and as impressive as his career has been, it’s hard to argue that if an opposing defense had to decide between doubling him or Lamb, the attention will shift to the latter a high percentage of the time.
In turn, as Machota points out, Cooks could be looking at a number of big-play opportunities right out of the gate for the Cowboys in 2023.
