Covid surge: Chandigarh reports 55 positive cases in a day, highest since Feb 16

CHANDIGARH: The highest single day surge of 55 Covid cases was reported in the city on Friday. This is the highest figure since February 16, when 57 cases were reported with a positivity rate of 2.33%. On Friday, positivity rate soared to 4.56%.

There are 20 patients on oxygen support and no patient on ventilator. Active cases have reached 268. There are 92,920 confirmed cases, including 1,165 deaths. A total of 35 patients were discharged on Friday, taking the recovery count to 91,487.

Tests per million per day, which was the highest in Chandigarh last week, dropped to the third slot after Bihar and Puducherry. “Cases have been rising and at this pace, daily cases are expected to rise above 50 for some time. The IIT Kanpur model predicted the fourth wave by the end of June. As cases are increasing overall, there is a probability that cases will increase by that time,” said a public health expert.

Even as Covid cases surged, vaccination among children was yet to gather momentum. UT administration has advised residents to get a booster shot.

Among children aged between 12 and 14 years, only 37.5% have been fully jabbed, while 33% of children between 15 and 18 years have been immunised. In a month, the second dose for children between 12 and 14 years picked up by 10%, while a 1% rise has been observed in the second dose among children between 15 and 18 years of age.
