Covid and the reason you are more likely to catch Omicron twice

With Covid cases remaining high across Scotland, many are testing positive for the virus for a second time.

Latest figures revealed that 3.5million people are currently infected throughout the UK thanks to a rise in new variants as well as greater easing of restrictions.

Infection rates are at a 'very high level' according to the head of the UK Health Security Agency (UKSA) Dr Jenny Harries.

Partly due to Omicron, millions are now catching coronavirus for a second time, reports Wales Online.

According to Robert Cuffe, head of statistics at BBC News, it is now pretty common to being infected multiple times.

He said: "Immunity fades and coronaviruses evolve. Most people can expect to catch the other coronaviruses, such as those which cause common cold symptoms, many times in their life."

He said that while at the start of the pandemic fewer than one per cent of Covid cases were reinfections, Omicron has now changed that, adding: "This looks very different to the versions of coronavirus that we saw before.

The new variant of Omicron is even more infectious than the one seen at the end of last year. But experts say this strain is not more likely to make you seriously ill - and if you have had Covid before, your symptoms may be milder.

Immunologist Professor Eleanor Riley said: "Your main concern should be whether you might pass it on to someone who is particularly vulnerable."
