There are 1,016 people in hospital with the virus, 36 of those in ICU.
The state recorded 30,402 new cases.
New South Wales Health says the high number of new cases is partly due to a data processing issue.
It says about 10,000 cases registered with Service New South Wales between Sunday and Monday, are included in today's numbers.
ACT
The ACT has recorded 1,226 new COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm yesterday.
There are 39 people in hospital with the virus in Canberra, including four patients in intensive care.
Deputy Chief Health Officer Vanessa Johnston announced this morning that children under the age of five who were exposed to a positive case would no longer have to automatically isolate for seven days.
Dr Johnston said that ACT health authorities had taken a "more conservative approach" to exposures in childcare settings, because children under five are not yet eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination.
But she said there had not been "a significant number of cases" in the early childhood group.
Among Canberra children aged five to 11, 79.3 per cent have now received a vaccine dose and 70.8 per cent of Canberrans aged 16 and older have received their booster.
