COVID-19 case numbers from around the states and territories

Here's a quick wrap of each Australian jurisdiction's latest COVID-19 statistics today — Wednesday, April 27.

South Australia

SA has recorded a big jump in COVID numbers, with 4,856 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours.

That's almost 1,400 more than recorded yesterday, and 600 more than the state recorded last Wednesday.

Three women have died with the virus and there are 247 people in hospital.

SA Health says today’s results were delayed due to a technical glitch.

Victoria

There have been another 13 COVID-19 deaths in the state.

There are 456 cases in hospital, with 32 of those in intensive care and eight requiring ventilation.

There were 10,734 new cases today. 

Northern Territory

Another 538 new COVID cases have been confirmed in the NT today, mostly from rapid antigen tests (the most common form of detection in the territory at the moment).

There are 56 people being treated for the virus in hospital, up from 46 yesterday, and one person requires treatment in intensive care.

Health authorities announced yesterday that triple-vaccinated people who are deemed close contacts will no longer have to isolate for a week (they will have to adhere to other measures around masks and avoiding high-risk and high-density settings.

New South Wales

The state has recorded 10 more COVID-19 deaths. 

There are 1,743 cases in hospital, 73 of those in intensive care. 

There were 12,188 new cases announced today.

Western Australia

WA has recorded 8,392 new COVID cases — a jump from yesterday's 6,711.

Authorities have also confirmed the deaths of 10 people linked to the virus, but not all 10 of those deaths occurred in the past 24 hours.

There are 253 people in hospital and nine in ICU.

The number of known active cases in the state has dropped slightly to 43,408.

Queensland

Another nine people have died with COVID in the state and 6,848 new cases were recorded.

There are 527 people in hospital, up from 484 yesterday, and 12 people are in ICU.

There are 41,459 active cases in the state.

Tasmania

Tasmania has recorded one new COVID-related death — a woman in her 70s who died at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

There have been 1,213 new cases, up from 958 yesterday.

There is one person in ICU and 40 people in hospital with the virus.

Fourteen of them are receiving treatment specifically for COVID symptoms.

ACT

The ACT has recorded 997 new COVID-19 cases as restrictions for close contacts ease in the territory.

From today, household COVID-19 contacts in the ACT no longer have to undergo mandatory isolation if they are symptom-free.

There are currently 69 people in hospital with the virus in Canberra, including four patients in intensive care but none requiring ventilation.

Of Canberra's children aged five to 11, 80 per cent have received a vaccine dose and 75 per cent of Canberrans aged 16 and older have received their booster.
