The Thiruvananthapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Saturday accepted the report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that gave a clean chit to the late Congress leader and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in a sexual assault case filed on the basis of a complaint by the prime accused in the sensational solar scam.
The court had earlier approved similar reports that exonerated All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal, MP, and Adoor Prakash, MP, in the same case. The agency submitted there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations against them in the case.
While accepting the reports, the court had dismissed a plea submitted by the complainant to quash the documents.
The CBI had also absolved Hibi Eden, MP, former Minister A.P. Anil Kumar, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader A.P. Abdullakutty after finding no evidence that proved their role in the alleged crime.
The previous Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had instituted a Crime Branch investigation into such complaints after coming into power in 2016 and later transferred these to the CBI five years later.
The Central agency then registered a case against the six prominent leaders in August 2021 on the complaint that they had sought sexual favours from the complainant in reciprocation for extending official patronage for her business endeavour.
