Couple 'told home safe after fire' only for blaze to ignite again hours later
A couple claim they were sent back to their fire-hit home after firefighters told them it was safe, only for a blaze to ignite again.
Merseyside Police and fire crews were called to Great Mersey Street in Kirkdale just before 11.55pm on Saturday, May 7, to reports of a fire. It impacted a row of three terrace houses.
Martyn Roberts said his brother and sister-in-law Mr and Mrs Roberts, who did not want to give their first names, live in one of the properties affected by the fire. He said they woke up to "very unusual noises from next door".

When they went outside to check they realised their neighbour's roof was on fire and they called emergency services. Speaking to the ECHO, Martyn said: "They called the fire department at 11.35pm, within five to 10 minutes they arrived to put out the blaze of the neighbour's roof.
"It took them around 10 minutes to put out the blaze and another 45 to 60 minutes to check if all the properties were safe to re-enter. During this time the fire crew had removed a lot of insulation from the loft and also created a huge hole between the loft space of my brother's house and the neighbour's house."

Mum rushes to A&E with ill son, six, to find doors closed for the night
A mum has warned night-time closures of Ormskirk Hospital children's A&E could cost lives after she rushed her child there only to find the doors closed.
Hayley Thomas and her husband Gary said "it's not right" the unit closes at night after they rushed to the hospital with their six-year-old son who was struggling to breathe. Mrs Thomas, 41, said they woke at around 11.45pm on April 27 to the sound of their son Buddy thrashing around and struggling to breathe.
After calming him down and trying to deal with the situation themselves Mrs Thomas decided to drive him to Ormskirk Children's A&E. But when the concerned parent got there around 1am she was concerned to discover it was closed.

She was met by a security guard who advised her to go to Alder Hey Children's Hospital - over 30 minutes drive away. Mrs Thomas, of Skelmersdale, said: "When we got to Ormskirk, it just said closed. I just thought, that’s not right, that can’t be right – that must mean adults, coming here, not children.
"But then as I got out of the car, I thought this is quiet, and the doors were shut. Then a security guard said, sorry we are shut – you’ve got to go to Alder Hey; I was just stunned.”

Yob broke man's jaw as he tried to stop fight outside club
A yob broke a man's jaw in two places as he tried to separate a fight outside a nightclub.
Jordan Yates, 23, hit his victim, Hayden Morris, so hard he caused a double jaw fracture and left him with permanent numbness in his lower lip. Liverpool Crown Court heard there were issues between Yates and the victim's friend, John Atherton, about a woman which led to the pair being kicked out of The Imperial club in St Helens.
They continued squaring up to each other outside and Mr Morris stepped in to intervene. He was concerned his friend was drunk and alone, and Yates had other men with him, said David Birrell, prosecuting.

CCTV footage played to the court showed the scene and powerfully built Yates striking Mr Morris “with a short arm jab” which left him with two fractures to his jaw and a lost tooth. He needed surgery to insert metal plates and also had two other teeth removed.
The surgeon said that the lip numbness following such an injury was likely to resolve though did not always do so and Mr Birrell said that two and half years later the victim still has it. He had initially not been able to eat for two months and was worried about his appearance on his young son.
