Couple killed by BMW after walking arm in arm on way to church

A couple were killed after being hit by a car whilst walking arm in arm on their way to church, an inquest heard.

John Mann, 91, who was known fondly by family as 'Jackie,' and his wife Joan, 89, died within two weeks of each other following the horror crash in Wigan. An inquest held at Bolton Coroner's Court on Wednesday, September 14, heard that the couple had been on their way to their local church just yards away from their house on Swan Lane in Hindley Green at the time of the incident.

Shortly after the couple stepped into the road "linking arms", Mr Mann was hit by a black BMW 1 series being driven by a woman in her early 20s named Susan Yates, MEN reports. The court was told that the impact of the crash on October 18 last year caused Mr Mann to involuntarily strike his wife - which led to them both being admitted to Salford Royal Hospital with catastrophic injuries.
