Couple dined on lavish meal of scallops and steak then left without paying £80 bill

A couple dined on scallops and steak while washing it down with booze before leaving the restaurant without paying.

Sergio Murtas, the owner of Sergio's, has warned the couple on Facebook that he will hand over CCTV of them dining and dashing to police unless they come forward to settle the bill.

He says the couple ordered "the most expensive food and wine" at the Guisborough restaurant, TeessideLive reports.

Their tab came to £80 as many online are calling on the out-of-pocket restaurant owner to "name and shame" the couple by sharing the images online.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the venue warned: "For the couple that racked up an £80 bill at 7pm tonight and then just left; we have you on CCTV and will get the police involved, in the case that you do not come back and settle this bill as soon as possible."

Sergio said the restaurant was giving the couple more time to come forward before contacting the police.

He said: "They haven’t got back to us. we can't be too sure if it was deliberate.

"They weren’t regulars and they did order the most expensive food and wine on our menu, therefore we thought it was deliberate.

"I haven’t yet contacted the police yet.

"They did order king scallops as starter, fillet steak and a bottle of one of our best white wines and another couple of drinks."

Sergio said a similar incident had only happened once before in the 10 years.

He added: "I just want to give them the benefit of the doubt."

Posters on Facebook have voiced their disgust at the couple.

One wrote: "Some people have the cheek of the devil, don’t understand how they have the audacity to just get up and leave without paying."

Another added: "It's terrible, don't eat out if you can't afford it. Businesses are struggling just the same as individuals."
