A country singer in the US has checked herself into rehab after butchering the US national anthem in a performance that drew widespread criticism.
Ingrid Andress has said she was drunk while singing The Star-Spangled Banner before a baseball game in Texas on Monday night. Her singing was widely panned and drew gasps from the crowd after one particularly shaky high note.
“I’m not gonna bullshit y’all, I was drunk last night,” she wrote on social media.
“I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need. That was not me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans, and this country I love so much for that rendition. I’ll let y’all know how rehab is. I hear it’s super fun.”
There has been speculation that Andress seemed to be suffering from more than just in-ear problems during her performance at the Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, which caused many viewers to say it was the worst version of The Star-Spangled Banner they’d heard.
“I’m so sorry, I’m sure Ingrid Andress is a wonderful person, but that was one of the worst national anthems I think I’ve ever heard in my whole life,” said Sports Illustrated writer Alex Carr.
Andress is a four-time Grammy nominee and made her name writing songs for other artists, such as Girl In The Mirror by Bebe Rexha, and Boys by Charli XCX.
The Nashville native’s debut album was released in 2020 and breakthrough single More Hearts Than Mine peaked at number 30 in the US charts.
