Councillor slams 'misinformation' following stabbing in Manchester city centre

A councillor has dismissed ‘appalling misinformation’ following a stabbing in Manchester city centre in the early hours. Police are investigating following an altercation’ on Market Street between ten men, which saw a man in his 20s being knifed on Saturday.

The man has since been taken to hospital for treatment for stab wounds to his leg. His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

Reports circulated on social media suggested someone had died. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that this is inaccurate.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Pat Karney said: “This appalling misinformation has to be called out. People should not have the right to put up such cowardly nonsense.

“This was a fight amongst 10 males. We have got to take the knives off the streets of Manchester and we are looking to the courts to help us.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police earlier said: “Shortly before 3am today (18 June) a man in his 20s was pursued by a group of males and was stabbed on Market Street in Manchester city centre.

“He is currently in hospital being treated for stab wounds to his legs that aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

“No arrests have been made but enquiries are ongoing to identify the offenders.”

CSI investigators have been pictured at the scene on the corner of Market Street and High Street as they conduct their enquiries.
