Council slammed over state of 'abysmal' cycle lanes

Sefton Council has been shamed by one person who has shown the dire state of the cycle lanes in part of the borough.

One person took to Twitter to show the state of the cycle lanes in Bootle where litter, mud and a shopping trolley plague the route that is taken by a number of cyclists on their daily commutes. The photos shared show Bankfield Street and Regent Road looking in poor condition.

Posting on social media, one person said: "As cycle lanes go, you’d do well to beat Sefton Council’s on the Dock Rd for sheer filth & hazards. Active Travel my *rse."

In response to his own tweet, the man also claimed that the trolley had been there for "weeks" as people joined in on the pile on, with one person tweeting: "It’s absolutely abysmal. I’ve given up on it. Unusable."

The author of the original tweet replied to Sefton Council who said it had been reported said: "Thanks. Some of the detritus is years old. You wonder would this happen anywhere else in the borough? It’s appalling & embarrassing."

In response to the photos shared, a Sefton Council spokesperson said: "Sefton Council have been made aware of litter on the cycle lanes on Bankfield Street and Regent Road in Seaforth and our street cleansing team will work to resolve the situation as quickly as possible to ensure the lanes are clear for use and free of debris.

“We have also been made aware of a damaged bollard on Regent Road and our Highways Team will respond to this report. If people wish to report an incident of litter, they can do so at our website, contact us on social media, or on 0345 140 0845.

“Additionally, people are encouraged to take litter home with them, use the bins provided at the establishment they are visiting or the litter bins on our high streets. Litter should not be dropped on our footpaths. We would also remind people that dropping litter is a criminal offence and could result in a £75 fixed penalty notice or prosecution.”
