Could India’s ‘cockroach’ protest movement flare up again?

  • Nationwide protests in India , led by the Gen Z -led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), resulted in the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan following widespread anger over entrance exam paper leaks.
  • Despite assurances from the Modi government that no punitive action would be taken, over 100 people have been arrested across the country, prompting the CJP to threaten renewed protests if they are not released.
  • While Bihar and Assam governments have withdrawn cases and released detainees, West Bengal has filed new charges and arrested individuals, including Muslims, for displaying 'offensive posters' and criticising the prime minister.
  • Delhi police have also initiated a crackdown on social media posts deemed 'objectionable' or 'offensive' towards Prime Minister Modi, requesting platforms to remove such content.
  • Chief justice of India, Surya Kant, criticised the excessive use of police force against students, emphasising the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
