The expectation is that Tyree Wilson and Michael Mayer will both play a ton of snaps during their rookie seasons. But with established veterans ahead of both players, the Raiders might try to ease them into the starting lineup.
The same can’t be said for rookie cornerback Jakorian Bennett, who might be forced into action due to need. The Raiders have a lack of cornerback talent outside of Nate Hobbs and that could mean Bennett sees a significant amount of snaps right away.
In a recent article by Pro Football Focus, they took a look at every team’s rookie class to see which player might have the biggest impact right away. For the Raiders, it was Bennett. Here is what they had to say about the Day 3 selection and his fit on the roster:
Bennett was a much-needed addition to the Raiders’ cornerback room. He allowed a completion on just 44.4% of targets into his coverage in 2022. Given the state of the Raiders’ cornerback room prior to the draft, Bennett has a legitimate opportunity to compete for snaps on the outside right out of the gate.
Having a rookie play a lot of snaps in the secondary isn’t uncommon as Nate Hobbs did it during the 2021 season. Given all of Bennett’s experience against big-time competition, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him on the field early during his rookie season.
The Raiders will likely try to ease Bennett on the field, just like Wilson and Mayer. But don’t be surprised if he is forced into action quicker due to the lack of depth at cornerback. Bennett could be an under-the-radar sleeper for the Raiders this season.
