American Jennifer Kupcho trailed closely behind Coughlin by a single stroke, joined by Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, and Australians Minjee Lee and Hannah Green in the top ranks.
Coughlin's round commenced on the 11th hole with a string of eight pars, followed by five birdies and a bogey in the final 10 holes. Despite the temperature barely reaching the 60s, Coughlin remained composed and attributed her success to patience and solid shot-making.
Reflecting on her performance, Coughlin expressed satisfaction with her recent form, following a notable fourth-place finish at the Evian Champions in France. She emphasized the importance of consistency and enjoyment in her gameplay.
Kupcho, who carded four birdies and a bogey, acknowledged the unpredictable weather conditions throughout the round, noting a significant improvement in her game as the sun emerged towards the end of her play.
Hannah Green, a two-time winner this year, highlighted the challenges posed by the weather but expressed contentment with finishing under par. Lydia Ko, a three-time champion, also navigated the tough conditions to post a respectable score of 70.
Canadian representatives Savannah Grewal and Maude-Aimee Leblanc led their compatriots with scores of 71, while former champion Brooke Henderson opened with a 72, citing the tough morning conditions.
Notable players like Lilia Vu and Lexi Thompson also posted scores of 71 and 72, respectively, with Thompson revealing plans for a limited schedule post this season.
