Cotgrave homeowers 'immune' as wall knocked down in crash - again

Photos show the aftermath of a crash which knocked down a wall in Cotgrave - and the homeowners say it happens that many times they feel 'immune'.

The latest collision happened between 11pm and midnight on Wednesday (February 2).

But the owners of the house on the corner of Colston Gate, at its junction with Hollygate Road and Bingham Road, said incidents like this had happened so many time they felt "immune".

Retired teacher John Handyside, 72, said: "It's like having three Covid vaccines, I'm immune again, it's happened so many times now."

The hubcap from a car was reportedly retrieved by the homeowners at the scene.

Mr Handyside, who runs Nottingham Kayak Club, said there'd been a history of crashes outside his house.

"I've lived here for 35 years or so, and people around here know this house as the one that's got the wall that's always knocked down," he said.

"Lorries and buses have been through it before."

The latest collision happened after he returned home that evening - and Mr Handyside called for new speed restrictions.

"I got home at 10pm that night and the wall was fine.

"Neighbours thought they heard a noise at around 11pm but we didn't hear anything in here," he said.

"I've said for years the junction needs to be changed, there's a 20mph speed limit near the school, and that should be here, too, or speed bumps."

Transport directors at Nottinghamshire County Council said that there had not been a history of crashes resulting in injury in this part of the village.

But they said the authority was willing to listen to concerns and that they had sent a highways inspector out to make sure the road was clear of damage.

Mr Handyside said the wall would take weeks to be rebuilt.

And he is fearful his insurance premiums will increase because of the amount of claims which have been made in light of previous incidents.

Nearby residents also said the road was dangerous.

Carer Emma Line, 28, who lives opposite on Hollygate Lane, said: "It's a nightmare, you get so many incidents.

"I'd like to see a mirror on the corner, and it's not nice to cross with a child. I walk up the road a bit and cross and walk back down because it's not safe to cross, it's absolutely awful.

"People also don't wait to give way, and you hear beeping constantly throughout the day."

Jenny Roe, 43, a teacher of Hollygate Lane, said: "The corner is dangerous but people just need to slow down, I've been living here for about three-and-a-half years and have already heard so many bangs.

"I don't think it is a council problem, people need to take more responsibility, it shouldn't be that dangerous."

Gary Wood, head of highways and transport at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "We’re sorry to see that a wall has been knocked down.

"There is not a history of any injury accidents at this site, however we’re always willing to listen to and consider any concerns residents may have.

“We have sent a highways inspector out to the site to make sure that the highway and verge are clear of any damage and we will work with the Police who lead on any investigations to determine the circumstances.

"Once concluded, any findings will be discussed with our Safer Highways team who will action any recommendations or carry out a further investigation as necessary.”

Nottinghamshire Live has contacted Nottinghamshire Police for more information on the latest crash.
