Cost of living: Employees could be eligible for cash boost of more than €300 per week

From energy bills to food costs, many households around the country are still feeling the impact of the cost of living crisis.

While households continue to struggle, there are some lesser-known welfare boosts that could give workers that extra bit they need.

Many businesses are also struggling, and as a result, may cut back on hours for staff. However, although this may be a difficult situation, some workers could be eligible for a cash boost of up to €308 every week on top of their wages.

You could be eligible for the payment if you have been placed on a shorter working week by your employer. Here is everything you need to know about a form of Jobseeker's Benefit called Short-Time Work Support and how to apply.

What is the Short-Time Work Support?

Short-Time Work Support is a form of Jobseeker's Benefit. The payment, which is made in respect of the days of work that have been lost, is given to workers who may have been placed temporarily on a shorter working week by their employer.

Employees must work at least one day each week that they would usually have worked and show a clear repetitive employment pattern.

So, if an employee had their working week reduced from a five-day work week to a three-day work week, then they may receive the jobseeker’s payment for the two lost days.

How much is the payment?

If four days are worked, however, you are not entitled to claim jobseekers. This is because you must be unemployed for four out of seven days.

How to apply

The easiest and quickest way to apply for Jobseeker’s Benefit is through MyWelfare.ie. Once you complete the form online, you can then send the UP14 form completed by your employer.
