Cost of fuel in Renfrewshire skyrockets - with some garages charging £1.99 per litre

Calls have been made for support to be given to the people of Renfrewshire as fuel prices across the country skyrocket.

The cost of petrol and diesel has soared in recent weeks due to uncertainty caused by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused major instability in the global economy, as Russia is the world’s third largest oil producer, and is responsible for around ten per cent of global oil sales.

As a result, drivers are facing prices which are at an all time high, with some areas in the Greater Glasgow region being forced to pay up to 1.99 per litre.

According to price comparison site Confused.com, the average price of petrol in the UK was 159.0p, the price of diesel was higher coming in at 167.8p per litre.

The highest price of petrol recorded for the UK was 198.9p per litre, and the lowest price was 114.9p per litre.

Whereas, the highest price of diesel was 199.5p, and the lowest came in at 138.0p.

Currently, Renfrewshire fuel prices have only risen slightly, with the cheapest recorded for unleaded at Morrisons Anchor Mills at 154.7p per litre.

While Esso in Renfrew Road recorded the highest price at 167.p per litre.

Diesel prices have risen more significantly, however, the cheapest in the area is Morrisons Paisley at 151.9p per litre of diesel.

The most expensive is Esso in Paisley’s Renfrew Road at 177.9p.

On Paisley Road West, just outside the local authority three miles from Paisley, the price of diesel is as high as 1.99p per litre.

Experts now fear the rising costs of fuel will have a knock on impact on the cost of food as companies increase prices to absorb the extra costs of fuel to deliver produce.

Politicians in Renfrewshire are now calling on action to be taken to support the public as the cost-of-living continues to rise for families.

Paisley’s SNP MSP George Adam said: “The cost of fuel is rocketing, this during a time when we face a hike in National Insurance contributions, heating costs rising and the highest rise in living costs for 40 years.

“It should also be remembered that it was the Tory government that removed £20 a week from Universal Credit.

“The Scottish Government has prepared £290 million to help in these increases but more must be done.

“The Treasury should ensure that the proposed increase in National Insurance does not go ahead.

“The energy companies are making huge profits at the moment when we are facing energy prices rising by £700 in April with another price rise on the cards later in the year.

“The French government has taken action to ensure that energy prices are capped at a four per cent increase this year. This is the type of action that is required.

“Unfortunately these are the levers that the Scottish Parliament does not have available to it.

“These are the powers retained by a government that we did not vote for and that we do not agree with, whether it be energy, commerce, immigration or Universal Credit policy.

“The people of Paisley are going to be hit hard by these increases and as always it will be the people that can’t afford anymore hardship that will be targeted most.’

Labour West Scotland MSP Neil Bibby added: “There is a cost of living crisis and Renfrewshire households are braced for further rises in fuel prices and household bills.

“Living costs have been spiralling out of control since September, long before oil prices jumped. The Chancellor’s Budget is less than two weeks away and he must use his Budget to give respite to hard-pressed Renfrewshire families. There must be concerted action to bring down inflation, help with households bills and get the economy firing on all cylinders.”
