Corruption inquiry interrupted as ex-police chief gets tissue stuck on his head

  • An inquiry into alleged corruption in South Africa was briefly interrupted when an ex-police chief accidentally got tissue stuck to his forehead.
  • Julius Mkhwanazi, formerly the deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, was giving evidence at the Madlanga Commission.
  • Mr Mkhwanazi was suspended in November 2025 following recommendations of an internal audit investigation into allegations of misconduct.
  • While wiping sweat from his forehead during the proceedings on Tuesday (14 April), a piece of tissue remained stuck, leading one of the chairs to pause the session.
  • The Madlanga Commission is a public inquiry investigating alleged corruption, political interference, and criminality within the South African criminal justice system.
