Corrie spoilers: Brian and Cathy get engaged as Melanie Hill exit teased

Coronation Street’s Cathy Matthews and Brian Packham's relationship is set to go from strength to strength next week on the ITV soap.

Cathy has become one of the most loved characters on Coronation Street over the past seven years, becoming even more of a fan favourite amid her funny romance with Brian Packham.

But in recent weeks, actress Melanie Hill made the shock announcement that she will be exiting Coronation Street in upcoming scenes – and now her final storyline has seemingly been teased.

ITV storylines have now revealed that the pair will get engaged next week as the soap seems to be paving the way for Cathy’s final scenes – and maybe even a double exit.

The drama kicks off on Monday, June 13, when Brian is trying to sell his dream to a sceptical Cathy.

As Brian witters on about the new life he has planned for them in Cornwall, Evelyn can see Cathy isn’t as enthused and tells Brian he needs a more romantic approach.

When Brian makes the shock suggestion to Cathy that they should get married, how will she react?

In scenes airing on Wednesday, June 15, Evelyn advises Cathy, who is nursing a wicked hangover, to come clean about her misgivings.

But instead, Cathy tells Brian that in answer to his question, she would like to marry him, leaving her newly minted fiancé thrilled.

On Friday, Cathay begins to contemplate leaving Weatherfield, but she is still trying to hide her misgivings about Cornwall.

Brian tells Cathy that despite everything, he doesn’t want to lose her and he’s put an offer on a house in Cornwall in the hope she’ll come with him. Will Cathy agree?

This comes after actress Melanie, 60, made the “extremely emotional” decision to walk away from Corrie, after “thinking about the future” post-Covid.

Melanie told The Mirror: “It’s not been an easy thing to decide. My family has been important but the pandemic has made a lot of people think about the future.”

She added: “It has changed a lot of things in my head. You’ve just got to see what’s important to you.”

John Whiston, Head of ITV in the North, added: “We’re sad Melanie is taking time away – she is such a skilled actress that she can deliver sadness and laughter, drama and comedy often in the same scene. We will all miss her hugely.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV.
