Coronation Street’s Sam Aston has addressed whether or not he intends to leave the soap after he first appeared on the cobbles in 2003 as Chesney Brown.
The longtime soap star, 28, appeared on ITV ’s Loose Women alongside his childhood sweetheart Briony Gardner, who is expecting their second child.
The couple already have two-year-old Sonny James, who they welcomed on August 11, 2020, just over a year after the couple married in a stunning Cheshire ceremony.
Loose Women panellist Janet Street-Porter turned to Sam to ask him whether he’s considering exiting the soap in the near future.
She said: “Is there any chance you could suddenly branch out and be somebody else or is that character and you so closely intertwined now?”
He replied: “I’ve played him for so long, but I’ve been lucky, because I’ve had so many storylines over the years that they always test you and it’s a new thing to sink your teeth into.
“So, I’ve not really entertained the idea right now. I don’t know, maybe not.”
The ITV daytime show played a clip of Chesney’s first appearance on the soap, where viewers saw him booby trap a door to pour water over Fiz’s head, which Sam said he “remembers like it was yesterday”.
Sam said his time on the soap has “flown”, adding that he feels “very lucky” to have been a part of it.
He said: “I can’t believe it and I’m very lucky. I thoroughly enjoy it at Corrie.”
He continued: “I think when you’re that young, you’re a bit more fearless as a child. I didn’t understand the magnitude of the show, I was just there and having a good time.
"Acting was something I enjoyed. I went to a drama workshop as a child and it was a hobby.”
Sam and his yoga teacher wife Briony added that they met at a drama workshop as teenagers.
Sam proposed in front of over 250 people in 2017 at the annual charity golf dinner that he hosts with co-stars Alan Halsall and Andy Whyment at the Worsley Park Marriott Hotel in Salford.
Talking about the big day, Sam said: “We’re quite private people so I wanted to do something she wouldn’t expect from me.”
Coronation Street fans have watched Sam’s character Chesney grow up from Cilla's little son to a father of five - with a series of intense storylines including being held hostage, painfully being dumped and becoming a single dad before he found love with Gemma.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV
