Corrie prison break, whodunnit and grooming horror: Five years ago in Weatherfield

Coronation Street has changed a lot in the past five years, with characters having left, new arrivals joining and families moving on from the past.

Since 2017 in Weatherfield, there's been new romances, new secrets, heartbreaking deaths and life-changing decisions.

In this month five years ago, one villain made a comeback in a shocking prison break, as another character was hiding a dark secret.

Another newcomer was horrifically grooming a teen character leading to harrowing scenes.

Characters around in this time who have since left include Rosie and Sophie Webster, Rob Donovan and who could forget evil Pat Phelan.

Liz McDonald, Kate Connor, Seb Franklin and Robert Preston were also still around on the cobbles, along with Michelle Connor, Johnny Connor and plenty of other familiar faces who have since departed.

Coronation Street aired devastating and dramatic scenes on the ITV soap in April 2017 (ITV)

But what was happening around this time in 2017, and has it impacted the show today?

Rob had been in prison for the murder of Tina, and in April 2017 he escaped before tracking down ex Tracy, and asking her to go on the run with him.

Tracy kept Rob's return a secret and plotted to flee with daughter Amy, with them going into hiding - but just weeks later Tracy was arrested over the attack on her dad Ken Barlow after a false confession.

Rob's attempts to help out Tracy led to him being recaptured.

Elsewhere, and the police were still investigating the attack on Ken, who was pushed down the stairs in a whodunnit.

Adam Barlow found himself in the frame for the crime, actually carried out by Daniel, with his cousin Amy dropping him in it with the police.

Accusations were tearing the Barlows apart, before the truth came out a month later.

Another huge storyline on the show at this time was Bethany Platt being groomed by her older and controlling boyfriend Nathan Curtis.

Bethany was manipulated into a romance by the vile character, and she had no idea he was part of a human trafficking ring.

After turning Bethany against her family and isolating her, Nathan abused Bethany and convinced her they were in a healthy relationship.

Bethany was later raped by Nathan's friends, while Nathan was also violent towards her - with her family left reeling over her ordeal.
