Coronation Street viewers have been left distracted with an apparent gaffe after Kelly Neelan finally discovered the true culprit behind her father’s death on Sunday evening’s instalment of the ITV soap.
Ahead of her highly-anticipated exit scenes, Kelly learned that she has been lied to over her father Rick’s murder, as she finally discovered he was killed by Gary Windass.
Kelly spent the past few months believing he was murdered by her mum Laura, who took the blame for the crime before her death in April.
Terminally ill Laura made a false confession to ensure that Gary would be there after her death to take care of Kelly.
However, Laura’s plan unravelled in dramatic fashion on Sunday, when Kelly was sent some of her mum’s old belongings which she had left in Spain.
Among the keepsakes, Kelly found a digital camera and looked through the old photos, discovering one which provided proof that Laura was on holiday abroad on June 17, 2019.
Kelly, knowing that this is the date her dad was murdered, realised that the photo meant Laura couldn't have committed the crime after all.
However, as the scenes unfolded after the camera discovery, many Corrie fans pointed out a glaring gaffe in the storyline as they refused to believe the camera would still have battery power after three years in storage.
Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “So the digital camera holds charge for like over 3 years eh ok.”
A second chimed: “As if the battery would still be charged in that camera and nobody has used a compact camera for about 10 years.”
“I'm enjoying this episode very much so I currently have no comment to make about Laura's Camera and its Unfeasibly Long-Lasting Battery. Maybe later,” another fan wrote.
A fellow soap watcher chimed: “We all know that Gary killed Kelly's dad, but even so a photo in Spain on the day Kelly's mum confessed that she killed him isn't an alibi.”
In later heated scenes, Kelly confronted Sharon with the photos and demanded to know who really killed Rick - at which point she finally learned it was Gary after all.
This comes after Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod previously confirmed plans to expose Gary's guilt over Rick, to revisit the storyline before Kelly leaves the show.
Speaking about upcoming scenes, MacLeod said: “Gary has to retrace his steps back into the forest of doom, where he once fought for his life with Kelly's dad Rick Neelan.
“It's a really brilliant tying up and full stop on that story, which began with that desperate act from Gary all those years ago.
“At times we've toyed with blowing it all up and revealing the full secret to everybody. But finding ourselves in a position where we're having to exit Kelly, it just means it's now or never.”
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV.
