Eagle-eyed Coronation Street fans have joked “inflation is real” after spotting the rising price of Roy Cropper’s pie and chips.
The beloved character runs Roy’s Rolls, where many a Corrie character can be seen grabbing a spot of lunch on the ITV soap.
But it seems the cost of living crisis has hit Roy hard after one viewer pointed out he’d more than doubled his prices in recent months.
Sharing snaps of Roy’s menu boards, Twitter user @GregorSwanson revealed that pie, chips and mushy peas used to be £2.60 - but three months on it has increased to £5.50.
He wrote: “Inflation is real. Roy Cropper has had to put up the price of Pie, Chips & Mushy Peas by 112% in the last 3 months #CostOfLivingCrisis.”
The Twitter user also cheekily tagged Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis and business and political editor Robert Peston in the post.
Fans were quick to comment on the hilarious post, with one writing: “I genuinely love that you’ve done this.”
Another said: “I texted my mate when I saw the curry had gone up!”
A third Corrie fan rightly observed: “Surely it was underpriced before?”
“Wow, Roy Cropper really out here giving us a taste of that inflation pie. Can’t believe we’re living in a world where even our mushy peas are getting more expensive,” a fourth wrote.
While a fifth joked: “Cropper the capitalist pig!”
Roy Cropper is one of the best-loved characters on TV and has been played by actor David Neilson for almost 30 years.
He first appeared in Corrie in 1995 as a secondary character, but became a permanent fixture on the cobbles in 1997.
Since then he has captured the nation’s hearts as loveable cafe owner Roy, with his signature cardigans and shopping bag he takes everywhere.
And who can forget his heartbreaking love affair with anorak-wearing Hayley, played by the brilliant Julie Hesmondhalgh.
In an interview with the Mirror, actor David revealed his character actually has Asperger’s syndrome, but it is never spoken about on the show.
He said: “Roy was a psychopath [when he first appeared in Corrie]. He was stalking Deirdre and was a bit scary. It's nice to play psychos, but they don't stay around too long.
"My wife is a special needs teacher and she worked with people with autism. She said Roy could have Asperger's syndrome, making him socially inept, rather than menacing. Nobody really knew what Asperger's was back in 1995, so it's my wife I owe it to.
"It's never mentioned in the story though, and it shouldn't be - Roy is a human being, and a label doesn't help him. But I think he's got it.
“It gives him reasons for his behaviour and gives me something to play. I enjoy idiosyncrasies in people and Roy is full of them."
