Coronation Street star Charlotte Jordan reveals she quit Twitter due to online abuse over the controversial actions of her on-screen character.
Charlotte, 28, plays Daisy Midgeley on the ITV soap and has been at the centre of a dramatic storyline as she grows closer to Ryan Connor, played by Ryan Prescott, following her stalker's acid attack. The soap barmaid has also been catfishing her love interest for numerous weeks, posing as his ex-girlfriend Crystal in a bid to cheer him up.
Their relationship came to a head when the pair shared a kiss just after her attacker Justin, played by Andrew Still, was sentenced to life behind bars. Daisy and Ryan are set to grow closer in coming weeks, as Charlotte said: “Yeah, I think there might be some trouble up ahead."
“I think I'm going to steer clear of social media because people are going to come for her, but it’s not my fault, they make me do it,” she told the Daily Star.
When asked if she receives hate comments online, she candidly said: “Oh god yeah. Yeah, they hated me but that’s fine. I think I learnt quite quickly early days that she was always going to be a very divisive character which is one of the reasons that drew me to her in the first place.
“So as soon as you commit to playing someone like that you know you’re not going to have a particularly smooth ride on platforms like Twitter which tend to be hateful.
“So yeah, I just tend to tune out and get on with the job really,” Charlotte explained.
The budding romance between Daisy and Ryan won't last for long as her catfishing stint is set to be uncovered in dramatic scenes. Daisy was trying to reassure Ryan that he was still loved by Crystal, but really she had said she wanted nothing to do with him.
Furious that it might set back his recovery, she decided to pretend to be Crystal - but she will be found out later this week.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
