Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has hit back at ITV viewers after mounting speculation the 48-year-old has gone under the knife for a hair transplant. The rumours came after he was spotted wearing a cap in an earlier episode this week.
The Steve McDonald actor shut down the rumours following Monday night's visit to the Cobbles, as viewers of the popular soap were convinced he was masking the procedure with his 'new look' by sporting the accessory on his head.
Monday's episode saw dad Steve support his daughter Amy Barlow after she stood up to her rapist Aaron Sandiford at her first party since she was attacked. But it appears more people were distracted by what he was wearing than the explosive scene.
The hour-long episode saw actor Simon wearing a black baseball hat whilst inside and outdoors and, while some suspected he had gone under the knife, others hinted that he could be hiding a dodgy haircut.
But the former I’m A Celebrity campmate has taken to social media to dispel any rumours, reports the Mirror.
Sharing a snap of himself wearing a white hoodie and a matching white baseball hat, he humoured fans on their cheeky comments.
He captioned the post: “To those who think I've had a hair transplant coz I’m in a hat, I'm also in a hoodie with no boob job. People are strange.”
And it didn't take long before a string of his famous pals and adoring fans flooded to the comments to poke fun at the mishap even more.
The actor’s co-star Alan Halsall, who plays the role of Tyrone Dobbs, replied: “What’s wrong with a hair transplant ?? "Asking for a friend [shifty eyes emoji, two cry-laughing emojis].”
TV personality Ian Lawman chimed in on the joke, adding: “So why are you wearing trousers then? [cry-laughing emojis].”
“Better not wear your sunglasses in case people think you had new eyes implanted [cry-laughing emoji]," said one fan, whilst another quipped: “I won’t lie, I could imagine Steve having a hair transplant [cry-laughing emoji] @coronationstreet.”
In a hilarious comparison, some fans even branded him as a "Poundland Eminem" because of his baseball cap making an unusual appearance for the character.
One viewer said: "How different does Steve look in that hat?" While another asked: "#Corrie Why has Steve got a hat on indoors?"
Simon's character Steve is one of the longest-running characters on the show, first making his debut on the cobbles in 1989 when he appeared in Weatherfield with his mum Liz, dad Jim and twin brother Andy.
The former tearaway has had his fair share of dodgy dealings but has become more of a comedic character over the years on the popular soap, which saw him pick up 17 awards for comedy and performance, plus a Legends of Industry Award throughout his career.
The acting star returned to Corrie last year having taken time off after breaking his leg.
Simon is married to former Hollyoaks actress Emma Gleave when they tied the knot in 2010 and they have three boys together - Alfie, Henry, and Teddy.
